Cats in fashion and pop culture

We’ve noticed cats popping up in popular culture and fashion a lot recently. There are definitely some fabulous feline trends taking over the catwalk, and here is a round-up of some of our favourites.

Lana Del Rey - skims Valentine’s photoshoot

Lana Del Rey stars in skims new Valentine’s campaign draped in sumptuous deep red faux fur and white fluffy cats. The photos are taken by renowned photographer Nadia Lee Cohen who is known for her pop-culture inspired aesthetic.

We think it could almost be our Cat Cloud throw in red. Should we do a special edition Valentine’s version?!

Taylor Swift - TIME Magazine Person of the Year

Taylor is a well-known cat lover, and when named as TIME’s Person of the Year, she asked to bring her cat along for the photoshoot of her magazine cover.

She Tweeted:

Time Magazine: We’d like to name you Person of the Yea-

Me: Can I bring my cat.

The results are these iconic images that sum up Taylor completely.

Vogue Met Gala 2023

Vogue’s annual Met Gala is a highly anticipated event every year, with the most A-List celebrities pulling out all the stops for their outfits on the red carpet. The theme last year was Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, and a number of guests took inspiration from the late Karl’s iconic cat, Choupette.

Doja Cat used SFX make-up and prosthetics to transform herself into Choupette. She wore a hand-beaded Oscar De La Renta gown, complete with hood and cat ears. Meow.

Jared Leto wore a giant furry cat suit specially made to replicate Choupette. The look completely disguised the wearer, and Leto only revealed himself after taking off the head of the costume.

Rapper Lil Nas X was glittering in silver for his ‘modern cat’ look, complete with beaded whiskers. On the night he reportedly only responded to questions about his outfit with “meows”.

Kim Kardashian was planning on taking Choupette to the event as her date, but apparently on first meeting in Paris they didn’t hit it off so she decided to go solo.

Cat Trends in Men’s Fashion Week 2024

In Men’s Fashion Weeks this January we saw cats pop up in a number of collections on the catwalk.

At Milan Fashion Week JW Anderson presented us with knits and bags featuring a cat’s face. This is actually Stanley Kubricks’s favourite cat “Polly” painted by his daughter, Katharina Kubrick for Stanley’s 60th birthday.

The trend continued into Paris Fashion Week, where Givenchy displayed cat-inspired pieces with camouflaged eyes and whiskers and fur coats that looked like actual kitten fur.

Acne showcased later in the week, and the collection included a long-sleeved tee with the face of a giant AI-generated kitten printed across it.

We also had some fun dreaming up what cats would look like if they attended Paris Fashion Week using AI tools, and our followers fell in love with these feline fashionistas!

Argyll Film Premiere

Just last night it was the premiere for new blockbuster film, Argyll, featuring a host of A List celebrities, plus Claudia Schiffer’s daughter’s cat, Chip

Whilst we think that animals can be sensitively included in film and TV, this particular film has caused quite a stir with Cats Protection and other animal charities.

Chip is a Scottish Fold, a breed known for its poor health and joint problems, so the worry is that glamorising the breed will cause a surge in people wanting to buy them. He also spends the entire film in a backpack, and Claudia Schiffer took the very questionable decision to bring Chip to the film premier in the same backpack, with Chip looking visually stressed which was very uncomfortable to see.

Alison Richards, Head of Clinical Services at Cats Protection, said:

'Cats are extremely territorial and crave freedom of movement so placing them in a small and confined space and taking them to new and unfamiliar environments, unnecessarily, is likely to cause them stress, fear and anxiety and will not provide them with any benefit.'

In 2022 we interviewed Charlotte Wilde, the animal trainer behind The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, who said:

“I hate seeing animals put in high stress situations on set without proper training so my team and I work with cats from a very young age.”

Whilst we love seeing a surge in cat trends as demonstrated in this post, we’re not sure that plucking a celebrity's cat from their home onto a film set and then a red carpet is very kind on the cat.
