When buying your kitty a collar for the first time, it can be tricky to know which size to buy or how to get the best fit. Here at Cheshire & Wain, we’re cat lovers who specialise in creating designer collars – so over the years we’ve come to know a thing or two about fitting your collar and finding the perfect size.

Use the below cat collar size chart to double-check your cat's measurement.

  1. Wrap a tape measure closely around your cat's neck and note down the measurement 
  2. Add 2.5cm/1 inch to this figure to allow the correct amount of space between their neck and the collar for a perfect fit.
  3. This is your cat's collar size. (If you don't have a tape measure - use a piece of string and a ruler)

If your cat already wears a collar that fits well, you can take it off and measure the inside circumference when it's fastened on the correct hole to find out your cat's neck size.

Cheshire & Wain collars are not suitable for kittens or cats that weigh less than 2.5kgs / 5.5lbs. We advise that your cat is at least 4 months old to wear a Cheshire & Wain collar unattended.

When fitting your cat's collar, make sure it isn't too tight or too loose – enough to be comfortable, without being too restrictive. As a general guide, there should be room to fit 2 fingers (2.5cm/1inch) between the collar and your cat's neck for a snug but comfortable fit.

If there is a big enough gap for your cat to slip their paw underneath, they may be able to take the collar off. They also might be able to wriggle around and nudge it off while they’re in bed. To prevent unnecessary loss, please ensure the collar is fitted correctly and that you select the correct size. Don’t choose a larger size for your cat to grow into – as this is more likely to result in loss.

To make sure the collar stays on, it’s important to choose the right cat collar size, and make sure it’s not too loose or too tight. If it’s too loose, your crafty feline will be able to show off their escape artist skills and take off their collar. (If there’s enough of a gap, they’ll be able to slip their paw underneath).

Therefore, it’s important to fasten the strap for a secure but comfortable fit. You can also encourage your feline with positive reinforcement when putting it on for the first time, and reward them with treats. After all, it’s important that the collar and ID tag stays on, so that your pet can be identified and safely returned to you if they go missing.

If your kitten is under 4 months old, they’re probably too small to have a collar just yet. Once they reach 4 months, it’s important to find a firm but comfortable fit for your kitty. You can then readjust according to their neck size as they grow.
